Tommy Torrens

	Tommy Torrens, age 90, of Pinckneyville, passed away Sunday morning, November 25, 2001 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.  He was a lifelong resident of the Pinckneyville and Oakdale areas.
	Tommy was born the son of Calvin Todd and Martha V. (Kimzey) Torrens in Oakdale on February 10, 1911.  He was united in marriage to Maxine Anderson in Carbondale on July 30, 1931 and she survives.
	Tommy was a teacher, coach and farmer.  He was respected and loved by family and friends.  He touched the lives of many through his love of teaching and his involvement with the community.  He enjoyed life whether it was when farming, fishing or supporting Pinckneyville basketball.  Tommy like friendly competition, playing games with family and friends and he always played to win.
	Tommy began his teaching career in a one-room country school and retired from 204 School District after many years as a teacher and coach.  He took great pleasure in working with children and seeing their lifetime achievements, academically and in sports.  In addition, he was a farmer and raised registered Hereford cattle.
	He was a member of he First United Presbyterian Church, Pinckneyville, where he served as a deacon.  he was also an Elder at the Galum Presbyterian Church, Pinckneyville.  He served two terms as a Perry County Commissioner.  Tommy was a member of the Board of Directors of Egyptian Electric and Egyptian Telephone Companies.  He was a 4-H leader and he taught Veterans Agriculture courses following WW II.
	Tommy is survived by his wife, Maxine, of Pinckneyville; a daughter, Frances Carson and husband Preston of Pinckneyville; three grandchildren, Carol Torrens of Normal, David Torrens of Monticello and Sandy Kiehna of Carbondale; a grandson-in-law, Brad Flinders of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Kay Torrens of Glen Carbon and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Kacie Flinders, both of San Antonio, Texas.  Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Norman T. Torrens; three brothers; three sisters; a granddaughter, Patricia Ann Flinders and a son-in-law, Russell Kiehna.
	Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 28 at 10:30 a.m. in the First United Presbyterian Church in Pinckneyville with the Reverend Tom Hobson officiating.  Interment was at Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville.
	Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville Tuesday evening from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8 until 9 a.m., then at the church from 9:30 a.m.until services.
	Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, American Parkinson Disease Association or First United Presbyterian Church of Pinckneyville.
